Thanks to the natural oxidation process, Corten forms a surface patina allowing it to resist on the meteorological conditions. The great success of corten steel is due certainly to its “self-protection” capabilities. This metal, in fact, during the oxidation process, covers itself with a coating composed of: an outer porous layer and an inner layer, which is very thin and rich in copper, chromium and amorphous and waterproof phosphorus.
Weathering Steel never completely stops rusting. The weathering process occurs after the panel is installed. It eventually decreases and from that point on the finish acts as a protective coating for the base metal.
Once stabilized, Corten will be ready to win the challenge against time.
