Corten steel tends to rust in the presence of humidity and air. Its rate depends on the speed at which oxygen, humidity and atmospheric pollutants enter the metal surface. As the process progresses, the rust layer forms a barrier for oxygen, water and pollutants to enter, and the rusting rate slows down. The rust layer formed on most common structural steels is porous. This kind of pore causes rust to fall off the metal surface after a certain period of time, which causes the corrosion cycle to start again. Therefore, the rusting process is repeated repeatedly, and at the end of each process, there is no retained layer in the steel.
![]() | Corten steels differ from other corrosion resistant steels, in resisting the formation of rust. Corten steel will rust, but the outer surface will only rust. Once the outer layer of rust is formed, the rust will not penetrate into the corten steel. The anti-rust layer on the surface acts as a barrier to prevent further corrosion of steel. The rust layer formed is porous and will fall off, which allows another layer to form deeper in the steel. This cycle repeats until the steel becomes useless. In corten steel, alloying elements make the initial rust layer formed better adhere to the steel, prevent the corrosion from penetrating deeper and weaken the steel. |
Corten steel is made of ordinary carbon steel with a small amount of corrosion-resistant elements such as copper and nickel. It has the characteristics of high-quality steel, such as strength and toughness, ductility, forming, welding and cutting, abrasion, high temperature and fatigue resistance. Corten steel is 2-8 times of ordinary carbon steel, and coating property is 1.5-10 times of ordinary carbon steel. At the same time, it has the characteristics of rust resistance, corrosion resistance, life extension, thinning and consumption reduction, labor saving and energy saving. | ![]() |

As a low carbon steel, corten steel usually has less than 0.3% carbon by weight. This small amount of carbon keeps it tough and tough. Weatherproof steel also includes other alloying elements, which help to improve strength, but more importantly, corrosion resistance. Many different alloying elements are used, but the three key elements in weathering steel are nickel, copper and chromium.
